    Taiwan has earned its international reputation as Formosa, the beautiful island, and nestled along its southeastern coast is City of Taitung, a natural and pristine city with clean air. Due to its remote location, the city lacks many medical resources and suffers the highest cancer mortality rate in the nation. Few of the women of Taitung have had routine breast cancer examinations–mammogram, breast MRI, ultrasounds, or biopsies–which leads to a 40% higher breast cancer mortality rate than other areas. Studies show that the earlier breast cancer is detected and treated, the lower the mortality rate can be.

       Thanks to a new partnership, Taitung’s future is about to change for the better. St. Mary's Hospital of Taitung upholds the values of love of the Lord, love of humanity, respect of life, and the spirit of serving the poor, through outreach to local tribes to care for rural minorities. The vice president of Taitung St. Mary's Hospital, Ms. Liang Juan Chen, has been caring for breast cancer patients for more than two decades. She is deeply concerned about the many breast cancer patients who have lost their lives due to the late discovery of their cancers.Vice president Chen stated, "In order to minimize the threat of breast cancer to women living in rural areas, Taitung must strive to improve by developing breast cancer prevention services.”It is
Ms. Chen's dream to establish a comprehensivebreast health center in Taitung to provide women in rural areas with accurate breast cancer diagnostic exams, allowing treatments through early discovery of breast cancers. In addition, the breast health center should provide full service patient care, including rehabilitation, counseling, nutrition, volunteering, hygiene, patient support groups, and more. It is within the goals of the center to further educate and encourage local people to live healthy lifestyles with good living habits to promote front-line disease prevention.
    Ms. Olivia Ho Cheng, the CEO of Aurora Imaging Technology, a US-based medical technology company in North Andover, Massachusetts, responded first-hand to the call of vice president Chen. She felt the urgent need of Taitung’s women for better breast care and resolved to donate a breast MRI system worth over one million USD to Taitung St. Mary's Hospital, hoping to help more women of rural Taitung receive the most accurate medical examination possible and the best treatments available. Breast MRI can detect cancer with extreme accuracy (98%), without X-rays and their negative health effects, while providing a comfortable testing environment. It has been endorsed by many major medical institutions in recent years, and if widely utilized, it is estimated that the breast cancer mortality rate could be reduced as much as 40%.
    
 
    This heartwarming gift from the United States has set a new milestone for the breast cancer prevention work of rural Taitung. However, the operation of this breast health center requires approximately four million TWD (approximately 137,000 USD) each year. The success of this initiative requires sincere commitment from all of us. All donations will be used for outreach education, equipment maintenance, medical services, patient support groups, and other day-to-day needs.
